A rebuilt connection to the 11 kV network

Jubilee Mall carries the largest single-site installation Sunbird Solar has delivered: a 3,522 kWp plant that injects straight into the bulk 11 kV network through 800 V inverters and a Sungrow MV station.

The site’s electrical connection was rebuilt. The 3-way ring main unit was replaced with a 5-way unit, giving the plant a dedicated solar connection and a pathway for future battery storage.

A further 1,385 kWp on the same site was taken under Sunbird O&M’s management, bringing the capacity in Sunbird’s care to 4,907 kWp.

Two plants on one site, maintained together and reported apart

Both plants on site are under Sunbird O&M: maintained, monitored and reported on monthly.

The Sunbird-built plant and the taken-over plant are reported separately, so the owner can see each one on its own terms.

Built for maintenance: walkways, ladders and air-conditioned inverter rooms

The 2,074 kWp plant built by Sunbird Solar is the largest installation in Ballito, on the town’s largest commercial complex.

Five LV connections, full generator integration, bespoke air-conditioned inverter rooms, access ladders and rooftop walkways were engineered for long-term operability.

The same client has since awarded two further installations.

Maintained, monitored and reported monthly against the revenue meter

The plant is under Sunbird O&M: maintained, monitored and reported on monthly.

Built across a live production site, for a repeat client

The Pietermaritzburg plant is a 2,840 kWp rooftop installation on a single site, built by Sunbird Solar.

It required bespoke inverter rooms and close coordination across a manufacturing site that kept running throughout.

It is the third project Sunbird Solar has delivered for this client. The others are in Komani (870 kWp) and Pretoria (930 kWp).

Handed to Sunbird O&M when it was built

Like every plant Sunbird Solar builds, it was handed to Sunbird O&M to operate. It is monitored, and its owner receives a report every month.

Belgotex, KwaZulu-Natal. Replaced and taken over. Manufacturing and industrial.

A third-party system that missed its promised savings, removed before anything was built

The project began by removing the old system. A failing third-party system, which had delivered neither the savings nor the reliability the client was promised, was taken out completely.

Sunbird Solar built a 2,040 kWp grid-tied replacement that steps up to inject directly onto Belgotex’s own 11 kV customer network.

A further 1,400 kWp already on site was taken under Sunbird O&M, bringing the capacity in Sunbird’s care to 3,440 kWp.

The replacement and the plant taken over, reported separately

The replacement plant and the 1,400 kWp plant taken over are both under Sunbird O&M: maintained, monitored and reported on monthly.

The two plants are reported separately, so the replacement’s results are never blended with the plant taken over.

Vukile Property Fund: retail centres under one operator

Centres include

  • Meadowdale
  • Kolonnade
  • Springs Mall
  • Phoenix Plaza
  • Highland Mews

Output and savings are published only from a complete measured year on a plant’s own meter; no portfolio output is shown for these sites.

A listed fund’s centres, built by many hands

More than 15 Vukile Property Fund sites under management, a mix of plants Sunbird Solar built and plants built by other installers.

Vukile Property Fund is listed on the JSE. Its centres under Sunbird O&M include Meadowdale, Kolonnade, Springs Mall, Phoenix Plaza and Highland Mews.

One operator and multi-site reporting for the fund

Each centre is reported on monthly, and the fund receives a view across its centres.

How we measure

Each plant is reported on monthly, with generation read from the revenue meter and monitoring platform and reconciled against the client’s monthly production report. Output is the most recent complete measured year, and we publish output and savings only where there is one from the plant’s own meter.

Of the 68 sites with verified performance data on file in July 2026, 18 sites, 13.9 MWp, were built by other installers and taken over.

Send us 12 months of meter data for any plant

We return a performance gap report, whoever built the plant. It is the first step of a site assessment.
